The Council of Europe: guardian of human rights
Strasbourg
On 18 November 2022, a delegation of the European Seniors’ Union undertook a study visit to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
The EPP partner associations had the opportunity to address the audience during the Congress. Our President An Hermans gave a speech in which she emphasised the importance of “A sustainable world for all ages”.
“Dear colleagues and friends, I challenge you to look at older persons through a different lens. Look at us as generations standing for the values on which Europe is built: Peace, Democracy, Freedom, Human dignity…. and ready to face the future with courage, together with younger generations!” – President Hermans
During the European People’s Party Congress Manfred Weber was elected as EPP President, he succeeded Donald Tusk.
“I am extremely proud to be elected President of the biggest political party in Europe and I am humbled to be able to continue in the footsteps of EPP leaders like Donald Tusk. Together we say no to a Europe of mistrust of the populists, that polarises people and destroys our future. We say no to a Europe of the elites and their top down approach. We are the party that is closest to the day to day realities of citizens. More than ever we will work to unite our societies and we will never stop fighting for a better and stronger EU for the people of Europe.” – President Weber

We wish Mr Weber and his entire EPP leadership every success. We thank former President Tusk and Secretary General López for the cooperation over the past years.
