Dear Members of the Executive Committee,
Dear Candidates in the European Elections,
In the light of the European Day of Solidarity between Generations, we would like to voice our ambitions and hopes to all future Members of European Parliament, all candidates in the European elections and the seniors who relentlessly support these candidates.
The upcoming European elections could be pivotal for the future of our Union as we know it today. During the Juncker Commission, important steps were taken to improve the welfare and wellbeing of all citizens. But still a lot of work has to be done. Albeit some tensions that might arise on the surface, both young people and older adults are convinced that they have a common future where each and every member shares a responsibility. Nobody benefits from envy or negativity if we want to take the way forward. Consequently, the participants of the European Seniors’ Union call on the members of the European People’s Party to intensify their actions in enabling practical, mutually beneficial and satisfying relations between generations.
One of the major challenges we are facing in this regard is the demographic change. Those changes are creating new challenges, regarding both senior- and youth-related issues. Seniors throughout Europe, together with the youngest generations are urging for a strong, smart and caring European Union in which nobody is left behind that tackles these challenges decisively. Therefore, we need a coordinated European strategy for demographic change which takes into account the differences and specific problems of certain regions and cities.
Together, we stand strong for a better Europe with a flourishing economic growth and valuable social progress. Together, we can make it happen.
Yours sincerely,
Guido Dumon An Hermans
Secretary-General President
