Demographic Change, Migration and Loneliness in Europe

Nicosia, Cyprus | 24–26 September 2026

The European Seniors’ Union (ESU), in cooperation with OPREPO and the Glafkos Clerides Institute, is pleased to announce the European Seniors’ Summer Academy 2026, which will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 24 to 26 September 2026.

Under the theme “Ageing is Living: Demographic Change in Europe and Cyprus”, this year’s Summer Academy will bring together senior representatives, policymakers, academics, civil society leaders and experts from across Europe to discuss two of the most pressing challenges facing European societies:

  • Migration and demographic sustainability
  • Combatting loneliness and strengthening civil society engagement

As Europe faces rapid population ageing, declining birth rates, labour shortages and increasing migration pressures, the Academy will provide a platform for thoughtful debate and exchange of best practices rooted in European values of solidarity, responsibility and subsidiarity.

Migration and Demographic Sustainability

The first thematic pillar will explore how migration can contribute to addressing demographic and labour market challenges while maintaining social cohesion and democratic trust. Discussions will focus on:

  • The European and global migration framework;
  • The balance between EU solidarity and national sovereignty;
  • The particular role of frontline states such as Cyprus;
  • Labour market needs in sectors facing workforce shortages;
  • Integration policies and intergenerational dialogue.

Participants will hear from leading experts, policymakers and representatives of European institutions, including the International Organization for Migration, the Council of Europe and the Wilfried Martens Centre.

Combatting Loneliness and Strengthening Communities

The second thematic pillar will address the growing challenge of loneliness and social isolation, particularly among older people. Sessions will examine:

  • The health and social consequences of loneliness;
  • The impact of digitalisation and changing family structures;
  • The role of volunteering and community initiatives;
  • Best practices for fostering intergenerational solidarity and social participation.

Special attention will be given to the contribution of senior organisations in building stronger, more connected communities.

Distinguished Speakers and European Dialogue

The Summer Academy will welcome prominent European and Cypriot speakers, including political leaders, academics, healthcare professionals and civil society representatives. Participants will engage in plenary sessions, high-level panels, interactive workshops and structured exchanges of best practices.

A highlight of the opening day will be the keynote address by Geertrui Mieke De Ketelaere, entitled “Alone Together? Seniors, Loneliness and the Rise of AI Companions”, offering a forward-looking perspective on technology, ageing and human connection.

Strengthening the European Seniors’ Network

The Academy is expected to gather around 40 international participants alongside local Cypriot representatives. It aims to:

  • Develop policy recommendations linking demographic change and migration;
  • Share innovative approaches to reducing loneliness;
  • Strengthen cooperation among senior organisations across Europe;
  • Promote active and healthy ageing;
  • Enhance dialogue between policymakers, researchers and civil society.

An optional cultural programme, including participation in the “Walk of Love” in the Troodos region on 27 September, will offer participants an opportunity to experience Cyprus while promoting active ageing, community spirit and well-being.

The European Seniors’ Union looks forward to welcoming participants to Nicosia for what promises to be an inspiring and thought-provoking European gathering.
