From Nicosia to Our Communities: New Ideas for Tackling Loneliness in Later Life
From 4 to 6 November 2026, the European Seniors’ Union will bring together representatives from across Europe in Bergen, Norway, to explore how housing can support dignity, independence and quality of life in older age.
Europe is ageing, and housing must become a central part of the response to demographic change. At its forthcoming Autumn Conference in Bergen, the European Seniors’ Union (ESU) will address the challenges older people face in accessing affordable, accessible and suitable homes.
Under the theme “Senior Housing in Europe – Ageing with Dignity, Choice and Independence,” the conference will examine how European countries can develop housing solutions that allow older people to remain independent, maintain social connections and access appropriate support as their needs evolve.
The programme will include a study visit to Helgetun, a community for senior living in Bergen, and discussions with housing providers, policymakers and experts. Participants will exchange experiences from across Europe, exploring community-based and intergenerational housing, home adaptations, energy efficiency and the links between housing and care.
A central focus will be the “missing middle” between living in an unsuitable home and moving into institutional care. ESU will advocate for a wider range of affordable housing options that preserve independence while providing access to care and community services.
The conference will also examine how European policies and funding can better address housing affordability, energy poverty and the specific needs of older people. Participants will work towards concrete recommendations, culminating in the adoption of the Bergen Declaration on Future-Proof Housing for Seniors.
For ESU, the message is clear: housing is more than a roof over one’s head. It is a foundation for dignity, security, participation and intergenerational solidarity.
By bringing European experiences together, the Bergen Conference aims to turn shared challenges into practical solutions and help ensure that everyone can age with dignity, independence and genuine choice.
