ESU Autumn Conference 2026 in Bergen: Building Better Housing Choices for Older People
Migration, demographic change and loneliness were at the heart of the ESU Summer Academy, held in Nicosia, Cyprus, from 24 to 26 September 2026.
The European Seniors’ Union (ESU) brought together politicians, policymakers, experts and representatives of senior citizens’ organisations from across Europe to discuss two major challenges facing European societies: migration and demographic sustainability, and loneliness and social isolation.
Discussions explored how migration can contribute to Europe’s workforce and help address labour shortages, while recognising that it cannot be the sole solution to population ageing. Participants highlighted the need to promote longer working lives, lifelong learning, better integration and greater recognition of older people’s contributions to society.
Working groups also examined European solidarity on migration, intergenerational dialogue and practical ways to support older people through community initiatives.
The second theme focused on the role of civil society in preventing loneliness and social isolation. Experts stressed the importance of age-friendly communities, accessible public spaces, volunteering and opportunities for meaningful social participation.
A practical workshop led by Gordana Matolek explored how movement, music, play and shared activities can strengthen relationships and foster a sense of belonging. Participants also exchanged national experiences, presenting initiatives such as community clubs, intergenerational living and lifelong-learning programmes.
The participant evaluation confirmed the success of the Academy. Of the 12 respondents, 75% rated the event Excellent, while the remaining 25% rated it Good. Organisation, pre-event communication, and the venue and facilities all received unanimous Excellent ratings.
Participants particularly appreciated the opportunity to exchange experiences, build relationships and discover practical ideas to bring back to their organisations.
The evaluation also identified areas for improvement, including clearer presentations, better language support and more opportunities for practical exchanges and in-depth discussions.
The 2026 Summer Academy demonstrated the value of European cooperation in addressing shared demographic and social challenges. Its discussions and evaluation provide a strong foundation for future ESU activities.
The key message is clear: Europe must prepare for demographic change while ensuring that older people remain active, valued and connected members of society.
