Theme: Demographic Changes in Europe – Challenges for European Governance
The European Seniors’ Union (ESU) proudly participated in the European People’s Party (EPP) Congress held in Valencia on 29–30 April 2025. Represented by a high-level delegation including President Stefaan Vercamer, Secretary General Patrick Penninckx, and Vice-Presidents Carmen Quintanilla, Georg Männick, Cor Spreeuwenberg and Noëlla Jacobs, the ESU made its presence felt at this landmark political event that gathered center-right leaders, policy-makers, and activists from across Europe.
The Congress was a vibrant platform for discussion, decision-making, and setting the course for Europe’s political future. With the ongoing political turmoil, the atmosphere in Valencia was one of both urgency and hope. Delegates reviewed current challenges and opportunities, particularly in the context of the war in Ukraine, demographic change, economic recovery, and defending democratic values.
One of the key highlights of the Congress was the election of the new EPP leadership team. The re-election of Manfred Weber as President of the EPP confirmed strong support for his leadership and vision. The ESU delegation congratulates him and the newly elected board members, expressing confidence in their ability to lead with integrity and purpose.
The ESU is in particular looking forward to a strong cooperation with the newly elected EPP Secretary General Dolors Montserrat and our Secretary General already had some fruitful exchanges with her.
The Congress also adopted several forward-looking resolutions, many of which aligned closely with the ESU’s priorities, including digital inclusion for older citizens, strengthened health systems, and the defense of social cohesion in aging societies.
For the ESU, the Congress was an invaluable opportunity for networking and alliance-building. Delegates engaged with numerous political leaders, youth representatives from YEPP, and policy experts, forging intergenerational dialogue and reinforcing the essential role of seniors in shaping Europe’s future. “Seniors are not a burden but a resource,” remarked President Vercamer during the plenary panel in which he participated, emphasizing the importance of experience, participation, and solidarity.
President Vercamer took part in a dynamic panel discussion focused on “A Fair and Inclusive Europe for All Generations.” Joined by fellow political leaders, youth representatives, and policy experts, Vercamer emphasized the vital role of seniors in Europe’s democratic and social fabric. He advocated for stronger intergenerational solidarity, digital inclusion, and sustainable pension systems, while also highlighting the need to recognize the contributions of older citizens as active participants in society. His intervention was well received and underscored the ESU’s commitment to shaping policies that leave no generation behind.
Furthermore, the ESU delegation actively contributed to debates and brought forward the concerns and aspirations of Europe’s senior citizens. They underlined the need for inclusive policies that respect the dignity of older people, protect their rights, and enable their continued participation in society.
The 2025 EPP Congress in Valencia stands out not only for its substantive outcomes but also for its spirit of unity and forward thinking. The ESU celebrates the success of the Congress and looks ahead with optimism, committed to continuing its advocacy for seniors across Europe and contributing to a stronger, more inclusive European project.
This is ‘Why it matters!”
