Farewell to Dr Bernhard Worms: A Founding Father of the ESU

On 30 December 2024, An Hermans, our former President, represented the ESU at the funeral of Dr Bernhard Worms in Pulheim, Germany. During her intervention she thanked Dr. Worms for his  tireless efforts as ESU President (2001-2013)  to strengthen the organisation, especially during a period of European expansion and integration.

“Dr Worms understood that the spirit of Europe is built not just around conference tables but also in the hearts of its people, rooted in shared values and mutual understanding. His unwavering commitment to this vision and his lifelong dedication to learning and leading by example have left an indelible mark on all of us.”

The news of his passing has resonated deeply with ESU members across Europe, prompting an outpouring of heartfelt messages celebrating his legacy.  Here are some reactions from our members:

– Peter Mach (Slovakia): “On behalf of the Association of Christian Seniors of Slovakia, I would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of Mr Worms. He will always be remembered as one of the founders of the ESU. R.I.P.”

– Antonios Demetriades (Cyprus): “Dr Worms was a connoisseur of European issues and served the EPP like no other. His visit to Cyprus and his appreciation for its cultural and historical heritage left a lasting impression. The European seniors are now poorer with his passing. We are truly grateful for his leadership. May his soul rest in peace, and his memory live forever.”

– Volodymyr Dzobak (Ukraine): “Dr Worms was not only a respected professional but also a person of great integrity and vision. His commitment profoundly influenced many, including Ukrainians. We extend our deepest condolences and honour his visionary legacy.”

– Noëlla Jacobs (Belgium): “On behalf of the cd&v seniors from Belgium, our sincere condolences to his family, friends, and the ESU family. We will never forget him and everything he has done for the ESU.”

– Janusz Marszałek (Poland): “Dear Bernhard, your engagement and loving, Christian vision will be deeply missed. You remain in our hearts forever. Rest in peace.”

– Margit and Sean Hawkes (UK/Poland): “Dr Worms was an instrumental figure in building the ESU. His warmth and passion for Europe were evident in every interaction. He personally invited us to contribute, leaving us with deep gratitude and admiration for his leadership.”

The European Seniors’ Union mourns the loss of this remarkable man, who was both a steadfast leader and a cherished friend. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive to carry forward his vision of a united and compassionate Europe.

May his soul rest in eternal peace.
