European People’s Party Political Assembly in Munich

The EPP Political Assembly, which brings together representatives from all EPP member parties and associations, met in Munich on May 4-5, 2023. This meeting occurs four times a year, and since the new leadership took over, the two-day event has been held in various locations and includes presentations from hosting political parties, thematic round tables on political issues, and discussions on internal EPP party matters.

The meeting in Munich had an extensive and dynamic agenda, with participants welcomed on the first day by EPP President Manfred Weber, who was delighted to host the event in his hometown and home party.

The President of the CDU, Friedrich Merz, and the Minister-President for Bayern, Markus Soeder, gave warm greetings, with Mr. Merz calling on the EPP to maintain its ambitious role in the international and geopolitical arena. Mr. Soeder emphasized that Europe was founded on fundamental values such as human dignity, peace, and freedom, and that these values remain central to all European politics today. He also stressed that the integrity of countries should never be compromised.

The EPP’s recent Political Assembly in Munich covered topics such as agriculture and innovation in Europe. The party emphasized the need to protect agriculture as a strategic sector, which delivers food security and provides a decent income for farmers. The EPP also called for a new Common Agricultural Policy with a strong budget to be negotiated after the 2024 European elections. Regarding innovation, the EPP pledged to make innovation the basis of societal prosperity and economic competitiveness in Europe. The party emphasized the importance of deep tech innovation and artificial intelligence and called for a human-centered approach to respect European values.

Overall, the EPP Political Assembly in Munich was a successful event that allowed members to come together and exchange ideas on key issues facing Europe today. The various presentations, round table discussions, and internal party discussions provided valuable insights and will foster  collaboration within the EPP.
